are samples of the
newsletters that Fr. Sean Dempsey sent to our benefactors during his term in the Mission Office for
Scotland
This present Eastertide of 2005 is
very eventful. The death of Pope John Paul II has affected all of us. It
was of course Pope John Paul II who canonized Daniel Comboni in October
2003. As missionaries we remember his visits to Africa especially to the
Congo, Malawi, Uganda and the Sudan where the Comboni Missionaries are
present in great numbers. The poor of Africa couldn’t come to visit their
Leader. He went to them bringing the Christian message of Faith, Hope and
Love...
On our TV’s we saw the Olympic Games,
where young athletes competed against one another in grueling events that
tested them, often beyond their limits. Many broke down in tears of joy
and triumph or in tears of frustration and defeat. The media too, brought
home to us the wars and famine ever present in our world. Our Scottish
Catholics responded to the huge “humanitarian disaster” in Darfur with a
£500,000 to succour the poor. The Olympics of joy and sorrow continue but
let us reduce the sorrow and bring hope to the victims of famine and war...
